Feather is a native of Bedford, Pennsylvania. As a young man growing up in rural Bedford, Feather considered himself fortunate when his parents promoted his art talents at an early age. "My mother would provide me with art and drawing materials to explore my creativity. My parents financed private art lessons with a Bedford artist named Jane Gaymen who really shaped my drawing and painting skills. I also remember viewing an exhibit of paintings by Kevin Kutz at St. Francis college when I was 17 years old and knowing I wanted to become an artist. These experiences spawned a desire to pursue the visual arts as a career."

Feather attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with a B.S. in Art Education in 1991. "I began as a studio art major at I.U.P. then transferred to the school of education during my junior year. It turned out to be a great decision. I love teaching and it has enhanced my skills as an artist. To teach authentically and powerfully, a person must divide the necessary skills into a series of understandable tasks. That accomplished, they can guide students to practice these skills in a logical step-by-step fashion. Teaching in the public schools has compelled me to do just that as I attempt to analyze the diverse skills that contribute to artistic success."

About the art

Feather's work reflects his interest in revealing the creative process. "My artwork is a result of observing my surroundings, forming ideas about my observations and expressing those ideas through a creative visual process. In this process I generally begin with a core subject or compositional idea and then react to it with successive strokes or applications of media. This process involves a great deal of discovery and change as the image evolves into something not altogether planned. It's during this cycle of making a mark, reacting to it and making another mark that many of my ideas for future artworks begin to form. I believe that creative action and creative thought are reciprocal. I hope that people who view my work will gain some appreciation for this discovery process and be challenged by the imagery."
